Pickles & Plops
Ladybug’s grasp of the English language is equally as amazing as it is humorous. The girls and I ate lunch on Saturday while Kelley was off piddling somewhere. As usual, Ladybug finished her meal before the rest of us and, as usual, she was not satisfied. Here requests for “murr” (more) did not get answered fast enough and soon turned into yells. I asked her if she wanted some fruit. “No. Murr.” I asked if she wanted more milk “No. MURR.” Eventually, I ran out of options and Ladybug ran out of patience. She yelled as loud as she could “PICKLE” This was an odd request. Then she repeated it, but lightly varied. “LAH-PICKLE. LAH-PICKLE”
The ever-helpful Butterfly chimed in and deciphered for me “Daddy, she says she wants a popsicle.” I went to the freezer and got one out. I unwrapped the frozen treat and handed it to the 18-month old screamer. Instantly, a smile came across her face. She took a nibble and then shared with me some keen insight. “Lah-pickle tasty.”
Butterfly chose one of the little dum-dum suckers for her dessert (you’ll note that mommy was not around…hence the naughty treats.) A few minutes later as she sat on the couch licking away, Ladybug walked by and noticed the treat. “Lah-Plopss” she informed me and then she toddled off to her toys.
So, if you ever find yourself wondering what it is that makes a toddler’s world spin, I submit to you that Lah-Plopss and Lah-Pickles are probably heavily involved.
