People up here always make fun of Southerners driving in winter weather, and I always have to set them straight. There's a difference between driving in snow, which is annoying but relatively easy if you take it slow, and driving on ice, which is a regular circus act. I try to explain that the reason Georgians have such a hard time in winter storms is because of the 4-inch-thick layers of ice that form on the road. If all we ever got was snow, it wouldn't be such a big deal.

And John, if it makes you feel any better, even the "authorities" up here did a lousy job with drainage on roads. Giant lakes form at just about every intersection, but it was even worse in New York. The best is when a thin layer of ice and snow forms over the lake. You step on it thinking it's solid and SPLASH! Wet up to your knees for the rest of the day!
