I thought our household was the only one where activity and noises ceased when the news was on. I still remember my dad getting excited every night as he settled down for his nightly dose of Dan Rather. I sat there as a 7 year old listening about plane hijackings, Chernobyl, the Challenger explosion, and the cold war, promising myself that when I was an adult I would watch whatever I wanted.
